About this event

Welcoming everyone to your museum service doesn’t mean everyone can take up the invitation. Life experience has taught many disabled people and their families that a visit to somewhere new isn’t worth the (often big) effort because of the potential anxiety and disappointment due to lack of access. Everyone misses out, including museums.

Join Jo Gillam and Beth Wilkey for an informal session to start to explore this topic including how small changes can make a big difference.

The training will

  • increase confidence in some of the language associated with disability
  • consider what we understand disability to be
  • look at the benefits of improving accessibility for disabled people and therefore everyone
  • introduce some (often low cost) ways to improve disabled access starting from before someone even leaves home
  • invite participants to consider the challenges to accessing their museum service and what further support they may need to realise and tackle these.

The session will take place on Zoom and will run from 10am-12noon with a short comfort break.

It will be based on a PowerPoint slide presentation for which you will need a screen larger than a mobile phone.
